I wil very gladly spend and be spent for you. 2 Cor. 12:15
We have written songs about it. We have made movies about it. Philosophers have tried to define it and others have tried to grasp it. Books have told us how to determine if we are in it and others try to explain how to act if we loose it. Some tell us how we should feel if we find it. Still this elusive definition of love escapes us.
To break it down to it's simplest form love is a decision. We have to decide to spend quality time with our children. Their laughter is the gift they give back to us. We have to decide to get involved with Big Bros. and Sisters of America. And the decison we have to weigh out is whether the extra money we spend on a crumpling heart is worth it. We have to decide to leave the comfort of our house, step outside in fridgid weather and walk into the slums of the city to hand out hot coffee and a warm blanket. And in that decision we look for a heart that can be melted or a hand that needs to be touched or a frigid body waiting for a hug.
All of these decisions equate to the common denominator of sacrifice. What kind of sacrifice are you willing to make to be God's definition of love today? Tell God you are ready and He will send you. Sacrifice beyond comfort and He will show you. Live beyond yourself and He will call you.
Just as Jesus gave His heart we can too. For He was interested in the smallest of details of another. When we abandon ourself interest love shows up. It is the language that runs to the desolute of hearts. It has the voice of encouragement that only wants to give and ask nothing in return. It has no other movement, no other motion and no other motive other than to give. Let our hands never grow weary of doing good for these are the hands of Christ.
To the man on the street
With dirty, grimy hair.
That stumbles dead drunk against the curb
Because nobody cares.
We want to send a message
That is evident and true,
Just let us love you.
That's all we want to do.
We're there because God showed us
This is the face of love.
And this our definition
And it is sent from above.
