I am afraid, I will trust in thee. Psalm 56:3
When I was eighteen I agreed to help my Brother-in-Law Bruce drive to California so he could start his new job. As we approached Los Angeles I glanced in the back seat where my co-pilot was sleeping. Unable to wake him up and needing gas I took the first exit off the freeway. To me Main Street sounded like I would be in sunny California near the beach.
Where it took us I will never forget. Main Street was right in the middle of Watts. You remember don't you? Riots, 1970's houses burning to the ground. It was the scariest place I had ever been. I was used to small town U.S.A.
Back in those days you couldn't pay at the pump so Bruce went in to pay. As fast as he left he came back screaming with every step for me to get in the car. I quickly found out the station was being robbed.
This was way over my head. But Bruce was calm and collected. His inner strength allowed me to stay in control. When we have someone to lean on our tough times become a breeze. When we have strong friends we draw from their strength.
Like wise we can draw on Father and rely on His strength. What better friend to lean on in times of trouble? His capable hands uphold us. Who is more dependable? He who hides us in His sanctuary or rests our frightful soul on a high rock. Their is only one that can do this and He is our Father.
When all seems lost and I'm afraid
I'll fall upon Your shoulders.
Knowing I will stand upright
And move a little bolder.
My eyes will look to heaven.
My heart will cling to thee.
And the peace that You bring forever
Is a peace I could not see.
