Give, and it shall be given Luke 6:38
It was last winter that I got a late call on a Friday night from my fourteen year old. " Hey dad, whatcha doing?" Not much Pat, just watching a little hockey." Say dad, do we have any Cookie Dough Ice cream?" No Pat, that is all gone as you ate the last of it."
Silently I could hear his little heart searching for a way to ask me to go get him and his friends some ice cream. Before he asked I said, "Would it make you happy if I went and got you some?"
Ah, er, jeez dad,I don't want to bother you." I was surprised with his sensitive response. So my response was equally sensitive." Pat if that would make you happy I would be glad to go get you some ice cream."
On the way to the grocery store I started thinking, here it is on a Friday night and all my son wants is to eat Cookie Dough Ice Cream with his friends. My son, sitting in an unsupervised house with four guys and three girls and all they want is some ice cream. Considering all the things these teens could be doing I was elated.
At the supermarket I called to see how many kids were there and again I was surprised by his comments. " Pat, how many kids are there?" Dad, there are seven but just get one container. Don't spend a lot of money on this. I just won't eat any. " With that kind of thinking he could have asked for the moon.
I bought two buckets and ran them over. When I pulled up all the kids came streaming out of the house and wanted to carry the Cookie Dough Ice Cream.
God says it is more blessed to give then to receive. On a cold wintry night I got a glimpse of that. Every incident in our lives is designed by God to show people Jesus. By our love, by our love they will know we are Christians by our love.
Giving is a gift from God that we are to bestow, present, yield and offer to others. What I did that cold wintry night was prepare the ground for the message of Jesus Christ. If given the opportunity and the means then don't shrink back. All they might want is some Cookie Dough Ice Cream.
If I give more
than others will expect
then it is the love of Jesus
that I will reflect.
If I care more
then others think is wise
then they will see Jesus
in my eyes.
If I give to another
that can never repay,
then God will be present
through out the day.
Let us give
without expectation
and watch God's radiation.
