What comes to mind when we use the words " In the presence of greatness?"
Benjamin Franklin asked himself every day " What good thing can I do today?"
To most people being in the presence of greatness would mean meeting the President of the United States. Or being with a dignitary like the Queen of England. It could mean spending time with great people like Mandela, or a woman like Helen Keller. But I beg to differ.
Being in the presence of great stature is being with someone that is sold out to Christ. Someone that surrenders completely and will not move unless God's hand is in it. It is a person that does not panic when the tough times come but only depends on God.
I believe it is as simple as when the neighbor takes his truck and offers to help the single mom because she has no money and nobody to rely on. Or it is the McDonald's manager that works in the trenches with teenagers. Day after day she is elbow to elbow with the young workers yet she still takes the time to listens to their hurting hearts.
When we have a heart that is broken down and surrendered up that is greatness. When we are led by the Spirit and then we listen and obey that is greatness. Show me that heart and I will show you a great person being used by the Kingdom.
Yesterday I heard a story of a Landlord that was owed money by the tenant. The tenant didn't pay and the Landlord went to court and won an order for the man to pay up. As the Landlord was leaving court he looks over and saw the seventy one year old tenant. He was dejected, lost and alone. The Landlord walked over and asked the old man " If you died tomorrow do you know for sure that you are going to Heaven. " The old man with an honest response said " No, I don't have that assurance." So the Landlord led the old man to Christ.
That to me is being in the presence of greatness. When our needs, our desires, our wants are set aside and the only view we see is the lost soul, that is greatness.
The Act Of Giving
I know there are times when people can't understand
my motives for giving so they might question why I give.
It is in the act of giving that the soul rejoices
and the heart becomes alive with passion.
Then, I am given the chance
to stand in the darkness,
cherish the memories,
and remember the laughter
that came with the giving.
