She was the last person I ever thought would accept Christ. She was too tough. My mother was a workaholic. She often worked three jobs at once to support her five kids. She was so busy working she never took time for life. She consequently never had any time for others. She had a truck drivers mouth and a cold heart. When you said, " I love you mom," there would be dead silence on the other end of the phone. When you went to hug her she would tighten up and recoil.
My mother was so tough I saw her get 18 teeth pulled and go to work the next day. When she broke her heal I saw her cut the cast off with a butcher knife so she would't miss any more work. When her Cherokee blood would get worked up I used to hide behind the couch. When she found out she was pregnant with her fifth child she threw a buthcher knife at my Father. Thankfully she missed.
We used to have a standing date. Every Tuesday we would meet for lunch. It was my time to plant a seed, be a witness or leave a book that hopefully would cut through the coldness. When I called her up one day to my surprise she said, " I can't go today I have an appointment." I was thinking it must be a hair appoinment or a doctor's appointment. But little did I expect to hear the words, ' I have an appointment with a pastor." After I picked myself up off the floor I said, " Don't leave I will be right over."
On the way to the appointment we talked. She said that there was something different about me. A light that shines no matter what I go through. She said I had a joy and she wanted that.
What a door opener to share Christ. I spoke of Jesus and how I had the peace that passes all understanding. I said that everything happens for a reason and life becomes so much better when we let God rule our lives.
We met with the minister and she said the most simple acceptance prayer that I have ever heard. To this day when I think of God being so good I think of the woman with the empty heart.
Lord you leave it up to us
when we will come to you.
Never turning Your back
inspite of the things we might do.
So patient and so faithful,
so loving and so kind.
Your love can fill the coldest heart
and then begin to shine.
