How Far Will You Wander?

thou should Iwander far off Psalm 55:7

Our church has a policy that throughout the holidays the children join their parents in the main auditorium. This year, midway through the sermon, a little red haired three year old broke from her mothers grasp. One couldn't help but chuckle a little bit at that scene.

As she wandered farther and farther away she would look back to see what mom was going to do. Then in a bold rebellious motion she moved to the middle pew. All the while her mother gave a stern look and demanded obedience.

I have to admit, far too many times I was that rebellious child in my wandering. Often times I never even looked back. I found that a heart that forsakes God is a heart that forgets God. In our wandering pursuit we forget things. We forget the peace that we have when our heart is surrendered. We forget that nothing makes any sense or holds any value unless it is of Christ. And we forget how our lives wind out of control unless it is grounded in Christ.

Retracing my steps that brought me back to Christ you would find a trail of tears and my broken spirit moaning for Christ. Just like the child lost in the middle of the church crying for her mother I was that child and I am thankful I found my Fathers hand.

Our Fathers hand is constant
But just like a little child,
Our wandering heart grows anxious
And before you know it we're wild.

The world looks so delicious
Like the candy in a store.
Nothing seems to fill us
As we always want more.

But our precious loving Father
Never walks away.
And the wandering, wondering child
Finally comes home to stay.
