When we were building hour house I noticed there was one area that called out for a pond. So I rented a bobcat, a back hoe and the weekend warriors were ready to dig. By the end of the weekend we had our pond.
But there was one casualty. I inadvertently ran over one of the Cottonwood trees. Now it lay almost prone to the ground. After five years what was once a question in my mind as to survival now flourishes. It now stands strong and upright.
That tree has taught me about leaning. Every time I passed by, it reminded me, spoke to me about leaning. Let's face it leaning, depending and relying is not apart of our character that comes easy, natural.
We begin our quest for independence in our teen years and on we go. But we are called to be dependent. We are instructed to lean upon the Lord. It is not easy but it is a life long task to pursue.
So I have to ask myself to whom am I leaning on? When I have relationship issues do I seek out my friends and ask for their advice? With life's challenges and struggles do I run to my Father? I have to remind myself that nobody can out do God.
When we lean upon Christ we lean upon an unmovable, unshakable, unchangeable rock that gives us an ability to stand upright no matter the circumstances.
And once we lean that independent spirit is stripped away and we will find we cannot live without Christ to be our one and only guide. Our broken spirit becomes our life song and then and only then can Christ use us to do His ultimate glory.
Father,
I am learning
to totally depend on You
The world will not have it's way
and tell me what to do.
I only want to lean
and reach for Your hand
because You are my rock
and I wait for Your command.
